Current Tariff Environment: What You Need to Know
Tariffs continue to shape the global trade landscape, and Glassnow is committed to helping our customers stay informed and well-prepared. While we specialize in glass containers and packaging — much of which is sourced from China — the tariff changes taking effect August 1, 2025, are not expected to alter existing duties on Chinese goods immediately. However, new surcharges on BRICS-aligned countries may place additional pressure on China’s trade relationships and could lead to broader shifts that impact sourcing, pricing, or logistics in the near future.
Glass & Packaging Tariffs
Glass Containers
At this time, there are still no new U.S. tariffs specifically targeting imported glass containers. However, broad tariff increases on allied nations and global suppliers — alongside ongoing inflationary pressures tied to fuel, shipping, and metals — continue to influence pricing for both imported and domestic materials.
China-Origin Goods
Imports from China remain subject to multi-layered tariffs, with cumulative impacts of up to 55% on affected goods as of May 2025. While temporary 90-day relief measures had been in effect, additional tariff hikes targeting BRICS-aligned nations — including China — are now confirmed and set to take effect August 1, 2025. These changes are likely to intensify cost impacts on a wide range of imported goods.
New Tariffs Announced July 7, 2025
The U.S. government has imposed new tariffs on several trading partners, effective August 1:
- Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Kazakhstan: 25%
- South Africa: 30%
- Laos, Myanmar: 40%
These tariffs may indirectly impact global shipping, component sourcing, and materials used in packaging and product manufacturing.
